With the 2014 Yokohama Triennale coming to a close, we’re examining works by the famed artist couple/duo Ed and Nancy Kienholz, whose works were exhibited in this year’s program.
Among those on view is “The Big Double Cross” (1987-1989). Comprised of a large bullet housed in a silhouette of a cross and placed atop a marble plinth akin to a memorial stand, the piece stands over 8 feet tall and is an evocative statement on the follies of war. In the artist’s own words: “War in the name of religion is a big double cross.”
