A vanquisher of demons and ghosts, Shoki actually derives from 7th century Chinese folklore, widely known as Zhong Kui.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=buddhartwobud-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;location=%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2F0878172483%2Fref%3Dsr_11_1%3Fie%3DUTF8\">Dictionary of Chinese and Japanese Art<\/a>, author Hugo Munsterberg described: \u201cIn China, [Zhong Kui] is canonized with the title of \u2018Great Spiritual Chaser of Demons.\u2019 He is usually represented in art as a large ugly man, wearing a scholar\u2019s hat, a green robe and large boots, and is usually shown either stabbing or trampling on demons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Fujita\u2019s rendering, Zhong Kui\u2019s attributes are well represented, with exception to his&nbsp;\u201cscholar\u2019s hat.\u201d Instead, a backwards worn <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kangol\">Kangol cap<\/a>&nbsp;takes its place \u2013 an intentional nod to hip hop culture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On another note, the \u201cSlayer of Demons\u201d is subject of a new fantastical Chinese film titled <i>Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and The Dark Crystal<\/i>, released earlier this year.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=J8H0oWCw6YQ\">Click here<\/a> to view the trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lalouver.com\/html\/artist.cfm?tArtist_id=251\">Gajin Fujita: <i>Warriors, Ghosts and Ancient Gods of the Pacific<\/i><\/a>&nbsp;is now in its final week and on view through July 2, 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IMAGE: (clockwise from top) Gajin Fujita,&nbsp;<i>Demon Slayer<\/i>, 2015, spray paint, paint markers, Mean Streak, 12k white gold, 24k gold and platinum leaf on wood panels6 panels, overall: 60 x 108 x 1 \u00be in.
