Paul Getty Museum, as she takes us behind the scenes into the installation of \u201cMesserschmidt and Modernity,\u201d currently on view at the Getty Center&nbsp;through October 14, 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Included in the exhibition are two paintings by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lalouver.com\/html\/bevan_bio.html\">Tony Bevan<\/a>, both inspired by the Character Heads of 18th century sculptor, Franz Xaver Messerschmidt. Here\u2019s how Antonia Bostr\u00f6m described the works in their new temporary home:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"362\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lalouver.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/image-11.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lalouver.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/image-11.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/www.lalouver.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/image-11-300x217.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The first objects are installed\u2014Bruce Nauman\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Holograms<\/em>&nbsp;and the smaller of the two Tony Bevan&nbsp;<em>Self-Portraits after Messerschmidt<\/em>\u2014and suddenly the exhibition seems to be a reality! Bevan\u2019s painting hangs like a square of deepest black velvet night sky, with a Character Head resting on its lower edge like a striped moon.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"541\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lalouver.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/image-10.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5571\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lalouver.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/image-10.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/www.lalouver.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/image-10-277x300.jpeg 277w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Scale also becomes a reality when all you\u2019ve worked with for months are small images with exactly identical dimensions, making all objects conform to one size and format. Thus Tony Bevan\u2019s monumental&nbsp;<em>Self-Portrait after Messerschmidt<\/em>&nbsp;seems even more monumental in relation to the other objects in the gallery than it had appeared in the design plans, even though it was to scale.
