href=\"http:\/\/blog.lalouver.com\/post\/39678400923\/so-amazing-the-archives-of-american-art-just\">previous post<\/a>, here are some examples of computer drawings from 1969 that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lalouver.com\/html\/hammersley_bio_40s.html\">Frederick Hammersley<\/a> was able to produce by using these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaa.si.edu\/collections\/images\/detail\/punched-cards-computer-art-frederick-hammersley-14817\">punch cards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hammersley recounted this process in an article he wrote for the scholarly arts and science journal <em>Leonardo<\/em> titled, \u201cMy First Experience with Computer Drawings.\u201d Here\u2019s a short excerpt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was shown how to prepare a computer program and how to transfer it to an IBM punch card by machine. The alphanumeric characters we could \u201cdraw\u201d with were: the alphabet, ten numerals and eleven symbols, such as periods, slashes etc. [\u2026] The intricacies and possibilites seem endless and I have spent a great deal of time trying to master the mechanics of this particular technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Frederick Hammersley, 1969<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frederick Hammersley: The Computer Drawings 1969 will be on view at L.A.
