Louver presents \u201cRogue Wave,\u201d a sort of micro-biennial that delivers the benefits of old-school biennials (exciting art) while avoiding the pitfalls (far fetched explanations meant to distinguish one biennial from another).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2\">Aside from size, the biggest difference between the series of summer exhibitions known as \u201cRogue Wave\u201d and conventional biennials is that the former is organized by a commercial gallery and the latter are mounted by public institutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2\">Each type of venue has its pluses and minuses, but \u201cRogue Wave 2013: 15 Artists from Los Angeles\u201d suggests that untested art is best served by institutions unencumbered by the idea that everything they present must make sense \u2013 the more authoritatively, the better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2\">Prepackaged insights and overcooked explanations are nowhere to be found in the jampacked show, which fills both floors of the gallery\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Los Angeles Times critic David Pagel reviews Rogue Wave 2013 in today\u2019s Los Angeles Times \u2018Around the Galleries\u2019 section.
