Tony Bevan on Messerschmidt in RA Magazine

13 Jun 2012

In the recent issue of Royal Academy Magazine, Tony Bevan (Royal Academician) provides insight to the influence of sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt on his work included in the exhibition, Messerschmidt and Modernity, opening at the Getty Museum on July 24th:

“I’ve been fascinated by the 18th-century sculptor Messerschmidt for over 40 years. The muscular pushing and pulling of the face allows me entry into the head,” says Bevan. “I’m also concerned with this ‘internal landscape’ in my paintings.” Self-Portrait after Messerschmidt (2009, above) is on show at the Getty Center, LA (24 July - 14 October; www.getty.edu).
