Tom Wudl invited us into his Downtown Los Angeles studio for a preview of the works in his upcoming exhibition at L.A. Louver. Opening in October 2015, the drawings and paintings are a continued rumination on the Avatamsaka Sutras (The Flower Ornament Scriptures), one of Buddhism’s oldest and most revered scriptures, that have been an inspiration to the artist for over 10 years.
Here we get a glimpse of Wudl working on the largest painting in the exhibition. Measuring approximately 5 x 6 ft, it is the largest work the artist has produced on this subject to date.
We also get insight into the materials, books and imagery that surround the artist in his working space. Shelves of books abound, and directly behind Wudl is a vast pin-up board where he pins studies, drawings and photography that inform his works.
Keep posted for more updates as his exhibition nears. **Spoiler** we are creating an online exhibition guide for the show that provides greater insight into this new body of work. Stay tuned!
