The gallery is buzzing!

23 May 2013

The gallery is buzzing with activity as we prepare for our upcoming exhibitions opening next Thursday, May 30th. Along with the Juan Uslé solo show (presented in our first floor gallery spaces), we will be displaying a group exhibition in our second floor gallery with artists: Rina Banerjee, Jason Martin, Grant Stevens and Matt Wedel.

Of these four artists, this is first time we’ll be showing works by India-born, New York-based artist Rina Banerjee. The images above illustrate the various elements (feathers, driftwood, gourds, shells and found objects) for her exquisitely ornate assemblage sculpture – that consequently has an equally elaborate title to match:

“Her captivity was once someone’s treasure and even pleasure but she blew and flew away took root which grew, we knew this was like no other feather, a third kind of bird that perched on vine intertwined was neither native nor her queens daughters, a peculiar other.” – try saying that in one breath!

Keep posted on our blog as we follow the installation progress, and come to the opening next Thursday to see the complete work in all its glory.

If you’re interested in learning a little more about Rina Banerjee and her approach, here’s a recent video from her participation in the 2012 Summer Salon Series at the San Diego Museum of Art.
