Terry Allen at Nyehaus Gallery, NYC

25 Oct 2012

An exhibition of work by artist, playwright, musician and singer/soungwriter, Terry Allen is currently on view at Nyehaus Gallery, NYC, through November 24, 2012. “Ghost: Works from Dugout, Ghost Ship Rodez & Others” includes works that spans the artist’s 50-year career with: works on paper, sculptures, assemblages, and the not to be missed multi-paneled video installation “Momo Lo Mismo,” 2010.

If you can’t make it to the East Coast for the exhibition, check out this earlier installation of “Momo Lo Mismo” in Terry Allen’s 2011 exhibition at L.A. Louver, “Ghost Ship Rodez, The Momo Chronicles.

In describing “Momo Lo Mismo,” Terry Allen discussed the inspiration behind this work with LA Weekly writer Shana Nys Dambrot:

A composer starts with just an idea in his head, and he has to turn it into something. That idea could be a picture, a word or a shape — there’s no difference in the mind. With these video collaborations, you see what you hear and hear what you see. It’s like watching what was in the composer’s head before he started writing.“ At L.A. Louver, Terry Allen: Ghost Ship Rodez was born of the same synesthesia. Allen uses video-based sculpture, original music and theatrical elements "as needed” — in this case, to tell the intensely stormy story of French writer Antonin Artaud’s transportation by ship to a mental hospital. “I tried to imagine what was going through Artaud’s mind during that voyage. Sometimes you need different tools to express different parts of a larger idea.”
