In 2008, Shirazeh Houshiary was commissioned to create the East Window for St. Martin in the Fields, London's famous church located in Trafalgar Square. Embodying an abstract cross-infused designed, the window becomes especially poignant given Houshiary’s Iranian ancestry. Considered a bold move by Reverend Nicholas Holtman of St. Martin in the Fields, he remarked: "The fact that we are standing now in front of a church window designed by an Iranian woman artist, at the beginning of the 21st century, is truly significant".
You’ll have the opportunity to see works by Shirazeh Houshiary stateside with her first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, opening at L.A. Louver on September 6, 2012. Including her recent sculpture “String Quintet” as well as three paintings, Houshiary’s exhibition will accompany a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Tony Bevan.
Both exhibitions will be on view through October 6, 2012.
