ROLL CALL is in its final week

12 Jan 2017

Now that ROLL CALL: 11 Artists from L.A. is in its final week, we’re taking the opportunity to share portraits of the exhibiting artists by Los Angeles-based photographer Jim McHugh.

McHugh is renowned for his large format Polaroid images of Los Angeles, urban landscapes monumentalizing that which is now invisible and derelict. He is also critically acclaimed for his series of artist portraits that include Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari, and David Hockney, and he has published several books on artists.

Here we get the best of both worlds – beautifully rendered portraits of artists taken from a large format Polaroid camera. In a world where digital images abound, it’s refreshing to see physical, tangible photography surviving – and thriving.

McHugh manages to not only document artists and Los Angeles, but to capture the spirit and essence of his subjects. Visit his website to learn more about this work.
