MY LA INTERVIEW SERIES with BIG SLEEPS/DAVID CAVAZOS
Where did you grow up in LA?
I
was born and raised in Los Angeles in the Pico Union District/Downtown.
What is your favorite thing about Los Angeles?
That’s a tough question to answer because there is such a diversity of culture and so many places to see here. There are many things I love about L.A. including the fact that I was fortunate enough to make it through a very rough and violent era that once plagued the inner city, and witnessed a great change in the culture with a huge growth of art popping up all over the city – which I think is fantastic. I would say that in order to really get a feel for how the city is, and I personally do this with friends that visit from outside the country, to take a drive or walk through Downtown Los Angeles, visit Olvera Street and see how much downtown is improving, but at the same time just a two-minute drive takes you down skid row, where you get a real glimpse of what this city is like.
Where do you find inspiration for your studio
practice?
I find inspiration in many places whether it be L.A. or a certain country where I may be working. I am always on a constant search for new ideas and trends, and looking for ways to incorporate new energy into what I paint and tattoo, or design.
Favorite eat in LA?
At the moment Fiesta Martin in Inglewood. I
highly recommend it if you are ever in search of an authentic Mexican
style cooked meal along with a great atmosphere. This is
the place to go.
Favorite work of art?
I’ve had a chance to visit many places but can’t name one specific piece. I was probably most inspired by the paintings inside the Vatican in Rome or the Sistine Chapel. The latest works from Jose Reza (Prime) have had a huge influence on me and my art.
