Leon Kossoff’s paintings, political iconography?

This month Brooklyn Rail’s Joseph Masheck discusses a provocative cultural theme in Leon Kossoff’s exhibition of paintings on view last spring at Mitchell-Innes & Nash (New York). 

“Over and over again, apparently, Kossoff has painted this church [Christchurch Spitafields] in his somehow lyrically heavy, putty-like manner. Asking myself why has led quite unexpectedly into a possible political iconography.”
