It’s official – fall is here! With today being the first day of the Autumn Equinox, we’re inspired by Alison Saar’s sculpture Fall that was installed in New York’s Madison Square Park in the fall of 2011.
The work belonged to a series of larger-than-life bronze sculptures that reflect the seasons through a woman’s various stages of maturation.
Fall is represented by a woman of the harvest with a head of branches extending upwards, barring no leaves but a smattering of pomegranates, some whole and others split. The woman holds her skirt in both hands catching the fallen fruit while others descend to the ground.
The images above show Saar’s preparatory drawing, as well as the full realized sculpture.
Alison Saar: Bearing, a solo exhibition for the artist, will be on view at the Museum of the African Diaspora, November 11, 2015 - April 3, 2016. The museum will be hosting an artist talk with Saar and author Camille T. Dungy on November 11, 2015, 6:30pm. Visit the museum’s website for more details.
