“This painting is based on a woodcut by Aristide Maillol from his illustrations of Vergil's Eclogues (1913-1928). In the print, a gender neutral figure is bent over in a narrative reminiscent of Narcissus gazing at his reflection. The gesture reminded me of something more basic and primal - a position relating to worship. This ambiguous act could be one of prostration or submission or simply looking at or searching for something. However, the main impulse behind the making of this painting was the way the woman is contained by the frame, simultaneously locked into place and falling forward and out of the space of the painting.”
