“I make art to find out who I am”

21 Jan 2015

“I make art to find out who I am – and so far I’ve been disappointed in what I’ve discovered. I’d hoped to find Giotto or Omar Khayyam in there somewhere. I can key it to three words. I want my work to be primal, archetypal, and monumental. Those qualities are at odds with my nature, which is lighthearted, yet you can’t help pining for things.” - Charles Garabedian, 2011

At 91 years of age, Charles Garabedian continues to maintain an active studio practice and recently opened an exhibition of new and recent work at Betty Cuningham Gallery in New York City. Titled, “Mythical Realities,” the show features large-scale works on paper made over the last three years.
