Hockney and Freud

30 Jun 2012

David Hockney and Lucien Freud shared quite a history together, even sitting for each other as portrait subjects. See the resulting portraits below, including and a video where Hockney recounts his experience sitting for Freud.

With both artists currently subjects of major museum exhibitions (David Hockney: A Bigger Picture, Guggenheim Bilboa and Lucien Freud: Portraits, The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth), we recall one of our earliest L.A. Louver exhibitions that included these two renowned British artists.

Shown in 1979, “This Knot of Life” was a two-part exhibition that featured works by both Hockney and Freud as well as fellow British artists Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Peter Blake, William Coldstream, Howard Hodgkin, R.B. Kitaj, Leon Kossoff and Euan Uglow. See a full range of images from both Part 1 and Part 2 of the exhibition on our website.
