Heather Gwen Martin tackles her biggest “canvas” yet. Commissioned by the Murals of La Jolla, Martin has been chosen to paint a mural that measures three stories high and continues around the corner of the building, adding another level of complexity. Taking full advantage of the wall space, Martin animates its surface with varied shapes in brilliant colors. “This piece has an awareness of (itself), and the shape of the canvas is really interesting in that it allows strokes to join at the corners and move around,” said Martin. “You can see the two major sides and, for example, places where the dark green and lime green meet, like a pushing point to the other side. It wants to stop, but it doesn’t. Some of my paintings don’t end where the frame ends, they look like they could go on forever but have to end somewhere.” (Click here to read more on the mural project in the La Jolla Light).
Here we see various stages of the murals progress over the past few days. Keep posted for the final reveal!
An exhibition of Martin’s paintings are currently on view at L.A. Louver through October 1, 2016. More details here.
