About 30 years ago to the day, L.A. Louver held an exhibition of work by venerated Los Angeles artist, Ed Moses. This was the artist’s first solo show with L.A. Louver, beginning his 15 years association with the gallery. Titled, Recent Work, the exhibition featured early paintings based on loosely abstracted diagonal grid forms, a recurring motif throughout Moses’ career.
“The grid is the armature which I hang the paint on,” explained Moses in a 1987 L.A. Times interview. “That’s where it starts. Within the grid is the gesture of control. Then I have the choice of either demolishing the grid completely or breaking it open.”
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is currently displaying nearly 100 drawings created by Ed Moses throughout the 1960s and 70s, celebrating the concepts and forms that lay at the foundation of his work for years to come. On view through August 2, 2015.
