Downtown Los Angeles just added another work to its public art collection with this commissioned sculpture by L.A.-based artist Alison Saar. Located outside the Hall of Justice the towering 12 ft tall bronze sculpture Embodied is, as its title suggests, a physical manifestation of the spirit and values of justice representing the roles of the District Attorney and the Sheriff.
In the artists’s words: “Embodied is not a typical depiction of Justice, for she wields no sword. This Justice needs no blindfold, for her lucid eyes are blind to creed and color, but all seeing in issues of truth and equity. Nor does she hold a scale. Instead she weighs and balances the book of the law and equates it to freedom and peace, as affirmed by the dove taking flight from her upheld hand.”
The installation was made possible by the Los Angeles County Art Commission and their continued efforts to create a platform for art in public spaces.
