Over the past two years, Jason Martin has diverged from his monochromatic approach to making paintings, and has introduced a colorful range of rich hues into his latest body of work. Wether slight or overt, the varied color applications accentuate the sculptural quality of the works – further defining the built up peaks and receding depressions of their textured surfaces.
Martin describes how nature played a role in this latest departure. Rather than copying or recording the properties of nature, he exposes the works to the elements: heat, light, wind and rain, and thus, encouraging alchemical metamorphoses and chance encounters to transpire.
Here we gain entry into Martin’s Portugal studio, to see exactly where these works were made. Set on acres of land in the natural wilds of rural Portugal, one can see how the immediate surroundings have directly played a role in his works.
We’re excited to see what else Martin has in store. His upcoming exhibition opens at L.A. Louver on April 13, 2016. Keep posted for more updates.
