On David Hockney “The Yosemite Suite”

30 Jul 2016

David Hockney “The Yosemite Suite,” a series of landscape of the famed national park, were all made on the artist’s iPad and in situ. The iPad afforded the artist a sense of freedom to create wherever and whenever, embracing the tool’s immediacy to work spontaneously. All color and mark making effects imaginable were at his fingertips, and quite literally so. The iPad and app enabled the
artist to render his subjects with the touch of his index finger and without restriction.

Above are images of Hockney during a visit to Yosemite in 2011 taking a moment to capture the scenery before him – clouds and mist rolling into the landscape just minutes before a snow storm. We also see how those iPad drawings materialized into large-scale prints, their scale speaks to the grandeur and majestic vastness of the national park.

David Hockney “The Yosemite Suite” is on view at L.A. Louver through September 2, 2016.
