‘Head of Chaim’ broke record sales

14 May 2012

Did you hear? Leon Kossoff’s drawing, ‘Head of Chaim’ (same subject as painting above) broke record sales last Thursday at Sotheby’s Modern and Post-War British Art Auction!

The work on paper’s estimate was 15,000-25,000 GDP. The lot sold at hammer price 64, 850 GDP. See work and details via Sotheby’s Catalogue.

Excerpt from article about the record breaking Auction in Art daily:

“These strong results reflect collectors’ determination to acquire rare and high quality works… In all, 42% of the works sold were for above estimate prices, which gives a good indication of the depth of bidding and level of competition in the sale room. Post-war works on paper  performed strongly, with a clutch of records in that medium for, amongst others, Leon Kossoff and Euan Uglow.”

Frances Christie, Head of Department, Sotheby’s Modern and Post-War British Art

Incidentally, the auction follows on the coattails of our Leon Kossoff exhibit which includes paintings and drawings. The show enjoyed a three gallery tour last fall! Click here for images, media and details about the  2011 Kossoff exhibit at LA Louver.
