We’re taking the moment to dig through our archives and share a little bit of the rich history we’ve enjoyed since the gallery was founded in 1976. Looking back on this day in 1983, we had the pleasure of showing an exhibition of early photo collages by David Hockney “New Work With a Camera” (May 14 - June 25, 1983) at our former Market Street address.
In a review by Christopher Knight, he stated “the most remarkable thing about looking at Hockney’s photographs is the way they look back at you. The composite image is reconstructed from a composite of focused sensory experiences in time that, brought together all at once, assume the property of a spectacle. There is an uncanny sense of mutual exposure of the work, a peeling apart of the layers of perception that transforms mere looking into seeing.” -Los Angeles Herald Examiner, Sunday, July 3, 1983
