This Day in Gallery History: 1981

1 Nov 2012

With Ed and Nancy Reddin Kienholz’s seminal work “Ozymandias Parade” at Pace Gallery, NY (November 2 - December 22, 2012)*, we are reminded of our first ever L.A. Louver Kienholz solo exhibition in 1981: “Sollie 17 and the White Easel Series.”

Created by the couple in 1979-1980, “Sollie 17” deals with the solitude of aging alone in America. Along with being shown at L.A. Louver, “Sollie 17” traveled to or was a part of 18 exhibitions worldwide including: 1981 Whitney Biennial; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, TX, 1984-1985; Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, 1985; Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna, Austria, 1989; Sonje Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea, 1996, just to name a few.

It was then included in the traveling exhibition “Kienholz: A Retrospective,” Whitney Museum of Modern Art, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Berlinische Gallery, Berlin, 1996-1997.

Following its extensive exhibition history, “Sollie 17” made its permanent home at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, where it currently resides.
