Celebrating painter Alice Neel

28 Jan 2013

Celebrating painter Alice Neel, who was born on this day in 1900. This 1968 portrait of Richard Gibbs is a favorite of ours, so much so it graced the cover of the booklet we produced for her 2010 solo exhibition here at L.A. Louver.

In her portraits, Neel strived to portray more than her subject’s mere physicality, but their inner life as well. In her words: “I become the person for a couple of hours, so when they leave and I am finished… I have no self.”
