Distinguished Lecture at the McNay Art Museum

Nancy Reddin Kienholz

The Merry-Go-World or Begat by Chance and the Wonder Horse Trigger

Sunday, February 24, 1:00pm, Chiego Lecture Hall

Completed in 1992, The Merry-Go-World installation stages the mysteries of birth, life, and individual futures in an eight sided carousel. Viewers spin a wheel of fortune and step inside one of the eight interiors ranging from the luxury of Paris to middle-class Beijing to the poverty of Houston’s Fifth Ward. “Elle” Mono Series #23, a mixed media tableau acquired through the McNay Contemporary Collectors Forum (MCCF), relates to the Paris interior. It is one of a series of unique works made from surplus material collected for the carousel environments and is on view in Majority Rules: A Decade of Contemporary Art Acquisitions.

A photographer, Nancy Reddin met artist Ed Kienholz in 1972. Soon after, they married and embarked on a lifelong artistic partnership. Nancy lives and works in Hope, Idaho; Houston, Texas; and Berlin, Germany.
