R.B. Kitaj began his paintings with drawing

30 Oct 2013

R.B. Kitaj began his paintings with drawing. An integral part of his practice, the presence of drawing became increasingly apparent in his later works.

We get a glimpse into Kitaj’s process in the painting Los Angeles No. 24 (Nose to Nose), 2003 (featured above). Viewing the work in stages, the line remains constant throughout the painting’s progression, even while layers of color build on the surface.

See this work and others in our current exhibition of R.B. Kitaj, on view at L.A. Louver through November 9th.
