Students from the Arnold Circus are finding inspiration in Kossoff

10 Dec 2013

Read a really lovely piece on Leon Kossoff’s most recent body of work, centering on the East London neighborhood of Arnold Circus, the city where Kossoff grew up.

Once regarded as London’s poorest slum, Arnold Circus has since undergone development and revitalization, though aspects have remained the same. According to Kossoff, “The school was there, where I used to go, they were very kind to me, they gave me a little space in the shed where I could keep my drawing board and charcoal. It’s still here.”

Now students from the Arnold Circus neighborhood are finding inspiration in Kossoff’s interpretations of their home town, and visited his exhibition “London Landscapes” at Annely Juda in London to try their hand in recreating their own iterations of the artist’s drawings. Click here to read the review and to see more examples of the stellar drawings by both the artist and students.

Leon Kossoff’s traveling exhibition “London Landscapes” is now on view at Mitchell-Innes & Nash in New York through December 21, and will travel to L.A. Louver from January 23 - March 1, 2014.
