Pick up a copy of Artnews for a recent review by Robert Pincus of our previous Kienholz: Berlin/Hope exhibition. Described are the two bodies of works (Volksempfängers and The White Easels), that the Kienholzes produced in the mid-late ‘60s from their dual studio locations in Berlin, Germany and Hope, Idaho. Here’s an excerpt:
“The bond between the White Easels and the Volksempfänger series is one of formal and thematic understatement. The Kienholzes replicated not only the easel that they used in their Hope studio, but also the cinder-block wall behind it. An implied narrative can be drawn from the empty easel waiting to be filled. Wholly compelling in their own right, both series foreshadow the more restrained styles of the Kienholzes’ large-scale tableaux to come. For many, these works are likely to expand a sense of the range of the profoundly affecting and genuinely groundbreaking work these artists produced together.”
Of the works produced in Hope, White Easel with Wooden Hand is featured in our 2nd floor group show, now in its final week and ends Saturday, June 28. Click here to see more works in the exhibition.
