Gajin Fujita’s newest painting Southland Standoff (2014), which is perhaps one of his most impressive works to date, was recently acquired by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. The 84 x 176 in. (213.4 x 447 cm) painting is included in the museum’s current exhibition Conversations through the Asian collectionsIn an effort to foster a dialogue between the past and the present, the group exhibition brings together contemporary artworks by Asian artists and the historical artworks that served as their inspiration.

Here we have Fujita’s painting surrounded by samurai armor and swords, alongside a suite of prints by 19th century Japanese master printer Tsukioka Yoshitoshi – an artist that Fujita has regarded throughout his career.
