ROGUE WAVE PROJECTS

Rogue Wave Projects / L.A. Louver promotes an independent, international exhibition program of project-based works by contemporary artists.

Evolving from L.A. Louver’s Rogue Wave exhibitions, which examined artists living and working in Los Angeles, Rogue Wave Projects / L.A. Louver expands upon this interest, with a view toward organizing exhibition, installation, and multimedia projects with artists beyond a traditional gallery structure.

Curated by L.A. Louver Chief Preparator/Curator Christopher Pate and L.A. Louver Director Peter Goulds, the series of Rogue Wave exhibitions in 2001, 2005 and 2007 at L.A. Louver took the form of group shows, which examined the spirit and vitality of art being made in Los Angeles. Encompassing a broad array of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, and installation art, these exhibitions reflected the depth and range of studio activity that is distinguishing the city as one of the leading centers of contemporary visual art worldwide. The artists who have contributed to the Rogue Wave programs embody a diversity of disciplines and span from emerging to mid-career in their experience.

Rogue Wave participants include:
2001 – Kristin Calabrese, Steven Criqui, Steve DeGroodt, Tamara Fites, Gajin Fujita, Yunhee Min, Carlos Mollura, Christopher Pate, Sharon Ryan, Charlie White, Pae White

2005 – Tetsuji Aono, B & T, Tanya Batura, Whitney Bedford, Mark Bradford, Tomory Dodge, Drew Dominick, Karl Haendel, Sean Higgins, Evan Holloway, Violet Hopkins, Nathan Mabry, Kelly McLane, Rodney McMillian, Jessica Minckley, Christopher Pate, Lucas Reiner, Mindy Shapero, Joe Sola

2007 – Joseph Biel, Joshua Callaghan, Amir H. Fallah, Portia Hein, Dan Ho, Ben Jackel,
Osman Khan, Tom LaDuke, Euan Macdonald, Sandeep Mukherjee, Eduardo Sarabia, Timothy Tompkins

The enthusiasm for the Rogue Wave exhibitions inspired the launch of Rogue Wave Projects / L.A. Louver, a new model for engagement with artists locally and internationally, with a number of forthcoming projects, both in the gallery and alternative spaces, in the US and abroad.

Rogue Wave '09
10 Artists from Los Angeles
16 July - 19 September 2009

Rogue Wave Projects / L.A. Louver will present the fourth Rogue Wave group show at L.A. Louver in Venice, California, with ten artists from Los Angeles, July 16 – September 26, 2009. Participants include Erin Cosgrove, Micol Hebron, Olga Koumoundouros, Richard Kraft, Annie Lapin, Dianna Molzan, Kaz Oshiro, Tia Pulitzer, Fran Siegel and Matt Wedel. A fully illustrated catalogue, documenting both Rogue Wave ’07 and ’09, will be published on the occasion of this exhibition.

Eduardo Sarabia
History of the World
17 July - 23 August 2008

Stemming from our first interaction with Eduardo Sarabia during our Rogue Wave ’07 show, Rogue Wave Projects / L.A. Louver undertook a unique project exhibition with this emerging Mexican-American artist for a summer presentation at L.A. Louver, entitled “History of the World” (17 July - 23 August 2008). For the show, Sarabia created hundreds of unique, hand-painted plates, riffing off traditional Mexican ceramic craft, and infusing his signature ico-nography related to the symbols and language of the cross-border black market and narcotrafficking. In addition to an immersive installation comprised of these ceramic works, narrative oil paintings were also presented for this exhibition. Rogue Wave Projects / L.A. Louver presented “History of the World” at Art LA (23 25 January 2009), in the context of Los Angeles’ leading contemporary art fair.
